Cell-bashing... literally!
Here's exactly how I feel--and long to do--every time I see some loud obnoxious cellphone gabbers out in crowded public spaces, though I don't think I really have the chutzpah to act on it. But I'd definitely use this gizmo if I ever have one in my possession, and only if it's not too cost-prohibitive. Yes, call me old-fashion--I prefer old-school--but I do like some privacy or semi-privacy while taking/making my calls. I'm even embarassed to answer calls in crowded public spaces lest it'll offend and assault the collective senses of the people around me. I've written about this issue here and here a while back and it still bothers me to no end. Ideally, I do like what some of the major US cities are doing to curb this reckless and selfish cellphone habit by enacting laws that would fine anybody who talk on their cellphones in public places that require absolute quietness, like movie theaters, libraries, museums, etc. The downside to this law is, in actuality, it is virtually impossible to implement and enforce, like the jaywalking law. My take is most offenders will get off with a stern warning and will hopefully learn their lesson the first time around. Still, cellphone is a necessity for most people and even involve life-or-death situations, especially for people in the rural and less developed regions of the world. In these rough and rugged terrains, building land-lines is simply impractical--lack of financial werewithals notwithstanding--and cellphone use is the only logical choice available. Don't be surprise to find in some remote Indonesian islands or desolate nomadic camps in the barren Sahara and see plenty of people with cellphones. My only plea is to only use it wisely and responsibly. It's just a simple matter of common courtesy and mutual respect.
