Lost in translation.. literally!!
Recently I was recommended by a friend for a translation gig in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a military tribunal proceeding that involves 2 Malaysian detainees. The gig is only for about 3 weeks but it pays extremely well. But first my Malay language skills had to be tested, specifically my ability to conduct simultaneous translation. Boy, the test was so fucking hard and I've never felt so incompetent in my own native language. The test consisted of watching a 10-minute Al-Jazeera news clip on YouTube about events in Guantanamo Bay and Timor Leste and translating them in real time. Many times I found myself mumbling or fell into long pauses because the people on the news were speaking too fast. It wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. It'd be so much easier if I could just listen to the whole news clip and then reiterate it in Malay. I've done many verbal translations before but not simultaneously. It's almost impossible for my brain to process information in two languages AT THE SAME TIME! I don't know how the UN translators do it but I do have a newfound respect for them. I'm pretty sure they all have plenty of professional training at hand. All things considered, I think I bombed the test and I'm not sure I'll get the job. I hope they would still consider me since I'd love for the opportunity to go to Gitmo--how many Americans, much less Malaysians, can say that they've been there? Damn, maybe it's time for me to go back to Malaysia. My Malay totally sucks ass right now but I can still cuss in Malay pretty good though...
