First day in Bucky-land

Today is my first official day at University of Wisconsin - Madison. Oh, how much I love this campus! Madison, as of now, is one of the few remaining bastion of liberal politics in the country. It's shamelessly hedonistic and alluringly sinful--and I love it! It's a fun little city and it has recently been voted the Number 1 party school in the country, though never let a few drunken frat boys peeing in somebody's lawn be the representative image of this campus. As variety is the spice of life, Madison is definitely the Indian curry of Midwest America.

Anyway, my first day of class here has so far been uneventful. I'm taking course overload this semester (14 credits, instead of the usual 9)--and no, I'm not planning to kill myself by studying to death, thank you for asking. My language requirement will most probably be waived since my Bahasa Indonesia and/or Malay should be deemed good enough, though I'm taking up Thai language just for kicks--and for possible future research. My other classes are Intro to SE Asia, History of SE Asia until 1800 (Pre-modern), and Political Anthropology.

So far I'm enjoying my time here. All I have to do now is find my own place--I'm crashing at my friend's apartment right now--and I'll be all set. Click on this link to see some pics of the UW campus.

Course overload is 14 credits?? Man you yankies have it easy hahahaha. Let's follow the footsteps of kiasu Malaysians and do 20 credit hours in a go. Hah, right I know the level is different.

Anyway the trip to Perhentian was great! I'm doing my advanced diving right now... but it's on hold (right now? But on hold? Paradox?) due to my low budget. I'll give you pictures when I have them. Get this: We saw a 6 foot whale shark, that was one of the most amazing thing ever... and during my first Deep Dive, I saw a school of barracudas, and the blue was out of this world, it was amazing.

Yeah, I know I'm such such a wimp but remember this: those kiasu have no life whatsoever! And also, I can't take my diving lessons when I'm all cooped up in the library, unless if the school decides to build a 30-foot deep pool INSIDE the library for people who want take a diving break from their studies.

I look forward to that pics. I bet the experience was totally surreal and amazing. It's a sad fact that we, the humankind, know more about the outerspace than we do of the ocean and its deep recesses. Anyway, please don't get too advanced; give me some time to catch up!!
