Well, if you believe in the Darwin's evolution theory AND a fan of the Chinese calendar, 2005 is indeed the year of the humankind (read: monkey). All aside, regardless if you're an evolutionist or a creationist, Happy New Year to all.
What can I say--same old shit, different year! What to expect--at least for me personally--in this coming 365 and a quarter days? I don't know. I'm sure a lot of people were sick of the question "what's your new year resolution?" and I can definitely empathize with the sentiment.
Why does a person needs to start afresh in January 1st, and not in any other day of the year, is a mind-boggling question for me. If you want to accomplish something, just fucking do it already. I think setting up a specific time in order to achieve certain goals simply shows that the person is not resolute enough to go through with the painful and arduous process and consciously trying to find ways to prolong his/her bad habits or even implicitly attempting to cop out of one's avowed resolution.
What's my non-time specific resolutions are? My more detailed and unambiguous goals are to transfer to UW-Madison next Fall or Spring next year; bone up my readings on and understanding of Progressive Islam, SE Asian politics, Political Philosophy, civil liberties, literatures and other "fun" stuffs; find a better paying part-time job; fix the alignment and balancing of my car; buy smaller rims and tires since my stupid car doesn't click with any tires bigger than 15-inch (it's wheel offset is too short, in case if you're wondering, and I have 16-inch rims and tires on it now); do 100 push-ups and 200 sit-ups EVERYDAY (I've been doing this on and off for the past few years); play sports more actively; find a house as soon as possible since I desperately need my own room right now; engage in more volunteer work; pay my stacks of parking tickets; drive less and take the buses more (students get to ride the city buses for free); buy a bicycle; and finally, make amends with Jess. No, I'm not going to offer her a full mea culpa, a partial one maybe, but I'm more than willing to meet her halfway.
Some of the aforementioned goals seem a little lofty and some are optimistically doable, but these are all the things that I've been doing (or tried to do) for the past year, only not consistently. So, I guess my main overarching resolution is to instill more discipline and consistency into my effort to achieve these goals. Ultimately, it is about being the best person one can be--physically, spiritually, and intellectually. For me, it is about striving to be a good Muslim, a good son, a good brother, a good friend, a good student, a good citizen of the world--in all, a good human being that tries to live life to the fullest and to make this world a better place for the generations to come.
May the new year brings the world a step closer to global peace. Again, Happy New Year to all!
