It's debatin' time, y'all!

Well, here I am sitting in the laundromat, waiting for the final spin cycle of my washing machine to end, and all I can hear is people talking about who won the first presidential debate last Thursday night. My opinion, or rather, my obviously biased opinion: John Kerry won the debate, hands-down. Bush's smirks, scowls, uncomfortable fidgeting and repeated stock answers pretty much said it all. And oh, did anybody notice that at one point during the debate, Bush looked so helplessly lost and actually paused for about 5 seconds as he was grasping in vain for one of his scripted answers. I guess Karl Rove (Bush's brain, as he's famously known for, and quite a fat one at that) went to the loo and brought the cue cards along with him. The next debate will be held in a townhall format, which means that the audiences will get to ask all the tough questions and the candidates will be tested on their ability to think on their feet and there's not much room for scripted answers (I sure hope so.) Anyway, I watched the Feingold vs Michels debate last night on TV and it looked like Michels was seriously overmatched and his inexperience was plainly exposed. And yes, Feingold won debate handily. It seems unlikely that Feingold's bloody and ugly re-election race of 1998 will be repeated again, unless if Michels decides to follow the path of the mean-spirited and ruthless Mark Neumann (Feingold's opponent in 1998.) Still, I saw one of Michels's newest ad on TV last night--the one that depicts a guy who supposedly is Feingold, running around in the playground acting child-like and clueless--and thought it was inane and juvenile, and sorely deprived of facts and substance.

As much as I despise polls but my duty as a Bush-hater compels me to include the latest poll from Newsweek that shows Kerry is now ahead of Bush 47%-45% after the first debate, with Nader getting about 2%. Keep in mind that Bush was leading Kerry in all polls leading up to the debate. Kerry can only get better but Bush just needs to do a lot of re-adjustments: say, replacing him with a better quality and more eloquent puppet; or installing a bigger RAM in his brain, so he can store more varied versions of his scripted answers; or for that matter, installing a new brain all together, an upgraded CPU, if you might; or maybe replacing him with that MAD TV guy who parodies him all the time, which would at least give the audience some comic reliefs. It has been an unpredictable, see-saw race so far but as the successive debates go, I hope more Americans can witness what a dumb horse's ass Bush is (and by extension, the Republican party) and make their choice accordingly.
